What to have ready
Date of birth and SIN. CRA accepts certain alternative tax numbers in specific situations.
An amount from your most recent assessed tax return from the current year or one of the previous two years. Use the amount originally reported even if a reassessment changed it.
A multi-factor authentication option and, for immediate access, a camera-equipped mobile device and accepted Canadian identification.
Choose a sign-in method
CRA user ID and password: create credentials specifically for CRA.
Sign-In Partner: use online-banking credentials from a participating institution; the bank does not receive your tax information.
Provincial partner: Alberta.ca Account and BC Services Card holders can use this route. CRA says they generally need only a SIN and can register even without filing in the last two years.
GCKey cannot be used to access a CRA account.
Set up multi-factor authentication
CRA requires an additional one-time code when signing in.
Options may include an authentication app, passcode grid or phone. Configure a backup method to reduce the risk of losing access.
Never share passcodes, security answers or credentials with anyone.
Verify your identity
For immediate access, use the Document Verification Service with a mobile device and an accepted Canadian passport, driver's licence or provincial or territorial photo ID.
Alternatively, CRA can mail a security code to the address on file, generally within 10 business days. Sign in again and enter it before it expires.
Add the business afterward
After registration, personal information is available. Add a business from the Welcome page using the BN and requested verification information.
Do not create unnecessary separate credentials for My Account and My Business Account: CRA says one registered account can access both after the relevant profiles are added.
Always begin at Canada.ca and check the domain carefully to avoid fraudulent sign-in pages.
Official sources and further reading: Canada Revenue Agency. Rules may change and their application depends on the facts.
